Silver Won’t Kill • Turning into One • Telepathy • Full Moon • Spotting a Werewolf • More ...

When a werewolf is involved, things can be pretty hairy—pun intended! We all know the classic tropes, but there's so much more to these legendary creatures. While I was scared of them as a child, I now have a deep appreciation for their lore and enjoy looking at depictions of them in modern media. I have never met a werewolf in real life, and I’m quite thankful for that, as I probably wouldn’t live to tell the tale (unless I had Bella Swan's luck). Right now, I am going to share 5 fascinating facts on werewolves that might surprise you.

5. Silver Won’t Kill

Believe what you want, but many folklore experts suggest that a silver bullet isn't the guaranteed end-all we see in movies. While it may cause significant discomfort and pain, it won’t necessarily cause a werewolf to burst into flames or vanish. According to Britannica, the silver vulnerability is a relatively modern addition to the mythos.

4. Turning into One

The legends vary, but the most common ways to become a werewolf include:

  • Being cursed by a powerful entity
  • Being born into a werewolf lineage
  • Being bitten by an existing werewolf
  • Gaining the power through ancient sorcery

3. Telepathy

In many modern interpretations, werewolves communicate through telepathy. This mental link allows them to coordinate as a pack, making them incredibly effective hunters. Your chances of hearing them speak in a human language while in their wolf form are incredibly slim. 2. Full Moon

Contrary to popular belief, a werewolf does not always have to wait until a full moon to reveal their true nature. In many traditions, they can shift at will or under intense emotional stress. You can track the current lunar cycles at The Old Farmer's Almanac to see when the next peak might occur!

1. Spotting a Werewolf

There are various physical and behavioral symptoms associated with werewolves in folklore. Here is a quick reference table for some of the most common signs:

| Symptom Type | Common Signs | | :--- | :--- | | Physical | Excessive hair, eyebrows meeting in the middle, long third finger | | Behavioral | Uncontrollable anger, insomnia, difficulty pronouncing "W" words | | Mystical | Magical marks on the palms of the hands |
